Gym Candy review

Gym candy is about a boy named Mick who loves football. His dad was a professional football player who taught him everything about the game. One day before Mick’s dad came home he searched his dad on the Internet. He found out that his dad was a rebel and was kicked out of the NFL. All of Mick’s thoughts of his dad were changed. When Mick starts freshman year football he works his way up to second-string running back. There is no way he can become a starter because the coach doesn’t start freshman. The next year there is a new coach who doesn’t care what grade the players are in as long as the starters are the best. Mick is worried because there is a freshman that has a lot of talent. Even though Mick is good he still gets worried. Mick goes to a gym everyday during the summer and has a personal trainer named Peter. Peter gets Mick using steroids to make him stronger so there will be no question about being number one. Mick is great and helps his team win many games. Unfortunately, Mick becomes depressed due to the steroids and all the stress he is under and tries to commit suicide. When Mick pulls the trigger his body has a twitch that moves his head just enough so that the bullet doesn’t kill him. Mick has to go to therapy but soon makes a full recovery and is back playing football again steroid free.
I thought that this book was great. It really made the reader feel the action and excitement. This book has influenced society because it focused on the effects of steroids. I think the main purpose was to tell people that steroids make you stronger but have serious consequences.

  1. This sounds like an interesting book. Does he ever make the varsity team as a starter?
