Carl Deuker

Carl Deuker is the author of the book Gym Candy. He was born august 26,1950 in San Francisco, California and was raised in redwood, California a suburb twenty-five miles outside of San Francisco. Carl played on many sports teams when he was younger but was usually the person sitting on the bench. He writes about sports but he says his inspiration was not from the teams he was on but from imagining what it would be like to be a pro sports player and how hard it would to achieve that goal, especially for him. When Carl was three his father died and his mother had to raise him by herself. She always encouraged him to have a wide imagination and in high school he started writing poetry and short stories. He attended the University of California at Berkeley where he majored in English but still submitted some of his stories to the campus magazines. After earning his masters degree, Deuker started journalism but decided to get a teaching certificate and has been a middle school teacher since 1977. Carl writes his books before school and edits them after school. The reason Deuker writes as a second job is because he could not handle the pressure of being a writer full time. This might be because a writer always has to worry if their books sell or not. Carl’s sports fiction writing is written at a high school level but is directed to middle school students so that they can get a glimpse of their future in later years of school. Carl has one daughter named Marian and is married to Anne Mitchell. Carl’s favorite sport is sport is golf and plays it every Sunday at a public course. He used to play basketball and volleyball and a intramural level of play but sprained his ankle so many times that he had to quit.
